Course Description

Join us for one of the most exciting visual experiences for photographers in the Western Hemisphere. And it's only 90 miles off the coast of Florida. Cuba is the largest Caribbean Island. It is 760 miles east to west and 55 miles north to south. Its history dates back to the fifteenth century, when Columbus landed in east Cuba. Its culture is influenced by Spanish and African cultures. Our Cuban photo excursion is an 8-day/7-night experience in which you will meet face to face with Cubans from all walks of life. This is an extraordinary opportunity for U.S. citizens to share thoughts, insights, and ideas with the Cuban people, centered on a "People to People" cultural and photo exchange. We will provide participants with a visa and Letter of Authorization for travel from Miami to Havana and back. Our journey will take us to the streets, courtyards, and homes of people who reside in Havana, the capital of the country and its commercial and cultural hub since colonial times. You will learn about daily life in this amazing, complex city and in nearby towns, where we will travel to see special cultural treasures. You will have a rare opportunity to visit with the Cuban people behind the aging facades of their homes, to photograph their interiors and create environmental portraits of the people that we meet. In addition, we will travel to the tobacco plantations of Pinar del Río for an exciting overnight stay. But Havana is the centerpiece of the trip, the center for art, music, dance, and film and the most beautiful city in the Caribbean, regardless of the fading paint and cracking stonework. This is a location-oriented workshop-we will not keep you indoors discussing Photoshop, but we are always there to advise and help out, whether about composition, camera handling, or Photoshop/Lightroom workflows.

This workshop is open to photographers of every level, from the novice to advanced enthusiasts. The workshop fee of $4,595 includes the following: round-trip airfare ($500) from Miami to Havana and back; U.S. Visa ($50) and license fee ($200); lodging at the 4/5-star Parque Central Hotel in Havana (6 nights) and in Vinales (1 night) (double occupancy with private bath and ample breakfast); field trips; tuition; plus an English-speaking local photography guide, a welcome lunch, and three additional lunches during the workshop. Single-room supplements are available to early registrants on request for an additional $400. If we cannot pair you with a roommate, we will assign you a single room and add the room supplement fee to your final bill. The cost of the flight from your destination city to Miami is NOT included in the workshop fee.

A nonrefundable deposit of $1,000 is required to hold your place and is due on September 12, 2014. Full payment is due by October 10, 2014. This workshop (including the deposit) must be paid by check only.

IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTE: Cuba Cultural Travel and OFAC require that all checks must be made out individually to Cuba Cultural Travel. You must write in theMEMO of your check-ICP/Seldin. This will assist in identifying our trip to the government. Please mail or bring the check to The School of The International Center of Photography, 1114 Avenue of the Americas, New York NY 10036 Attn: Donna Ruskin.

IMPORTANT FLIGHT INFORMATION: Round-trip airfare from Miami to Havana IS INCLUDED in your tuition. Participants should NOT book their flights to Miami until trip has been approved. As the flight to Havana is scheduled for an early-morning departure, it is imperative that all participants arrive in Miami the night before. Hotel accommodations in Florida are NOT INCLUDED in the workshop fee. A group rate will be arranged at a local hotel in or near the airport in Miami.
